How to compare plumbing estimates

Line up scope, materials, permits, testing, restoration, changes, and payment terms before comparing totals.

THE SHORT ANSWER

Answer

Line up scope, materials, permits, testing, restoration, changes, and payment terms before comparing totals.

The lowest or highest price does not by itself establish quality, completeness, or value.

PAGE-SPECIFIC GUIDE

Guide

PART01

Normalize the company name first

Put the legal contracting entity, license information, contact person, and proposal date at the top of each column. Confirm that the same company will invoice and that the Washington record matches. Similar trade names can otherwise make two documents look comparable when the responsible entities differ.

PART02

Rewrite broad task labels as rows

Break repair the leak or replace the heater into access, removal, materials, connections, permits, tests, cleanup, restoration, disposal, and closeout. Mark included, excluded, allowance, or unknown. Ask the provider to revise the document rather than relying on your private interpretation.

PART03

Compare price conditions, not just totals

Record diagnostic fees, minimum charges, hourly or fixed components, allowances, taxes, deposits, progress payments, cancellation terms, and change pricing when supplied. The site does not provide market prices. Its job is to help you see which assumptions make one total different from another.

PART04

Read schedule language carefully

Separate a proposed appointment window from a promised completion date and from material lead time. Ask what happens when access, permits, inspections, concealed conditions, or another trade delays work. Avoid turning a preliminary phone estimate into a guaranteed schedule.

PART05

Choose the clearest supported scope

A useful estimate links the proposed work to an observed condition, names limits, explains changes, and leaves a readable closeout record. Price matters, but a total without those elements can be difficult to evaluate or enforce. Keep every revision instead of replacing the original file.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Questions

What should I describe first?

Describe two or more proposals that describe different assumptions, allowances, or included work. Add legal company identity, written task list, exclusions, material details, permits, schedule terms, and warranty. That gives the recipient a clearer starting point.

When should I stop checking?

Before checking anything else, do not choose solely from a verbal total when important scope and responsibility terms remain unclear. The lowest or highest price does not by itself establish quality, completeness, or value.

What should the call decide?

Ask which differences explain the price and which questions need a revised written response. Prepare a side-by-side checklist with identical questions sent to each provider only where doing so remains safe, relevant, and authorized.
